Naturally OutDoor: 20 years of blazing the trail at Lake Constance

An Overview of the OutDoor 2013

The OutDoor trade show celebrates its 20th birthday - 913 exhibitors from 42 countries - Outdoor water sports return

Friedrichshafen - The quantum leap made by nature sport in the last two decades is reflected in the impressive development of the OutDoor in Friedrichshafen over the same period. In 1994, its first year, the trade fair for the outdoor industry had 213 exhibitors and 5,500 visitors and was primarily carried by the German market. In the meantime, the influence of the event, which has since moved to new fairgrounds, is now felt throughout the world. Lake Constance has become the place where the international outdoor industry presents its roadmap for the new season. 913 exhibitors from 42 countries, including the global market leaders, will present at the 20th OutDoor, which will be held from 11 to 14 July, 2013.

"In times in which business models, consumer habits and the economic climate are changing like they are, the OutDoor is an important event on many levels”, said Mark Held, Managing Director of the European Outdoor Group (EOG), in emphasising the importance of the flagship trade show. "It represents the ideal platform for the newest products, industry ideas and marketing initiatives, and helps exhibitors as well as visitors to prepare themselves for the challenges of the future. In my opinion, the atmosphere at the OutDoor is truly unique and offers everyone involved an excellent experience - small retail speciality shops as well as large global companies.”

At the 2013 Outdoor, established exhibitors will be represented, presenting their products and innovations across 85,000 square metres of exhibition space. "We are very proud of the level of participation by the outdoor world at the show in Friedrichshafen and have created a strong forum with conditions custom-made for the industry. As a cornerstone of sporting goods retail, we give the outdoor industry our complete attention”, stressed Klaus Wellmann, CEO of Messe Friedrichshafen. After long break, outdoor water sports will again be part of the programme in July. "We are pleased to have experts like Wavecrest, Mega-Sports-Robson, Blue + White, Kober + Moll and Prijon on board for the OutDoor 2013, where they will be presenting at a joint exhibition space. The lake at the fairgrounds will also be available to our guests as a natural testing ground”, announced project leader Stefan Reisinger.

Even though focus of the OutDoor is always on future challenges, the 20th edition of the trade fair will also be an occasion to look back at the past two decades of its history. The 2013 OutDoor will include an extensive special exhibition in the upper level of the East Foyer about product developments in the last twenty years. In addition, as part of the OutDoor Fashion Show, selected outfits from the past will briefly return to the catwalk to remind us of a few historic products which some people may consider worthy of cult status, while others might regard them as fashion crimes from the past. "This birthday is an important moment for both the OutDoor as a trade fair, as well as the outdoor industry as a whole. Throughout the history of the OutDoor, we have seen a lot of changes and our industry has developed very positively during this time”, said EOG President David Udberg. "Although we are all looking to the future in these economically difficult times, we also want to be able to celebrate the success of the OutDoor over the past 20 years. As Europeans, we can proud of the four days in July in which the Lake Constance region becomes the world’s outdoor capital, welcoming brands, retailers, manufacturers and journalists from all over the world.

OutDoor Conferences in cooperation with the European Outdoor Group
During the show, expert presentations and information exchange will be in focus at the East Conference Centre. "On Friday and Saturday, we will offer our guests the opportunity to start the day with interesting and inspiring presentations, including breakfast, beginning at 8 a.m.”, explains project leader Stefan Reisinger. International experts will speak on topics like changes in retailing, sustainability, bluesign and apparel trends.
An influential seal of approval: the 2013 OutDoor Industry Award
Tested and certified as good - that is what it means when a product innovation has won the OutDoor Industry Award, the seal of approval of the outdoor industry. Entries in the categories of apparel/helmets/footwear, backpacks/luggage, mountain climbing equipment, camping equipment, sleeping bags, accessories, materials innovations, as well as products with high ecological and sustainability value can be submitted by 6 June. The best of them will be presented with the OutDoor Industry Award on 11 July at the OutDoor. The "OutDoor Celebrity of the Year 2013” will also be honoured. This prize goes to a personality who has a special contribution to the outdoor industry.

Special exhibition on the world of tents
A comprehensive overview of the current tent market will presented by international tent producers in the OutDoor’s tent city (Rothaus Hall A1 and the West Open Air Grounds), an exhibition which is unique in its size, form and clarity of presentation. Over 700 items will be exhibited in more than 10,000 square metres.

Fashion in motion: The OutDoor Fashion Show
This year the OutDoor Fashion Show will move to a new location and will be held in the East Foyer. Companies like Adidas, Trespass, Pearl Izumi, Scott, Gröbel, Zweibrüder and others will show off the newest trends and collections for the year 2014.

The ultimate in sport and spectacle
For the first time, the bouldering elite will compete for the German Bouldercup in Friedrichshafen. On 12 and 13 July, the athletes will compete for the title of 2013 German champion. The competition will be simulcast live over the Internet.

The runners, on the other hand, will keep their feet solidly on the ground for the Gore Trail Running Parcours in the West Open Air Grounds, where natural obstacles will invite everyone to give the course a try and test their skills. The course, which runs through a variety of terrains, will be the focus of the contest to determine Europe’s fastest trail runner on Friday and Saturday. The final round of competition will take place on Saturday, 13 July, at 6 p.m.

Additional highlights at the West Open Air Grounds include the slack and waterline, which requires a strong sense of balance and sure footing if you don’t want to end up cold and wet, as well as the high rope course with the flying fox, which offers a thrilling, fast ride over the open air grounds.

Cool meets sustainability: the OutDoor Party
On Saturday, 13 July, the OutDoor party will be held under the open sky - as you would expect at the world’s leading outdoor trade show. In the Atrium and the West Foyer, party guests will be able to drink a toast to the 20th birthday of the OutDoor. The 15 euro admission fee includes the party shirt, all food and four drinks. This year, Polartec is once again the sponsor of the party, supporting the industry and the EOCA, the European Outdoor Conservation Association. A shuttle bus will bring party guests to hotels in the surrounding area free of charge at 12:30 a.m.

Opening hours
The OutDoor 2013 will be open from Thursday, 11 July until Sunday, 14 July, to trade visitors only (Thursday to Saturday 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Sunday 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.) All important information about the OutDoor, including a list of exhibitors, events, and directions to the exhibition grounds, is available for download free of charge at www.outdoor-show.com.
